Networks: Traceroute Analysis

I examined paths of my network traffic to three sites: nytimes.com, amazon.com, and this one (rashidakamal.com). I looked at the traceroute results from a few locations I frequent: NYU Washington Square, NYU Brooklyn and my home; but also, a new spot: the Billy Bishop Airport in Toronto. I’ve seperated out the traceroute results by website below, with analysis of patterns and a disccusion of terms to follow.

Oddities in the Maps

One of the more (initially) intriguing aspects of the mapping results was that many results wound its way to the Cheney Reservoir in Kansas. Of course, as the blogs of former ITPers will reveal, this is no secret networking hotspot, but rather an artefact of maps and the IP geolocating service we used: the reservoir is the center of the United States and the location of some IP lookups defaulted to the centroid.

This meant some of the maps are actually quite boring: many look as though the route suddenly appears in Kansas and sometimes, stays there. Other maps seem to obscure or time out of hops. See below:

Further Discussion

I was particularly intrigued by why so many of the hops in my routes were seemingly timed out: “***”. Interesting, it seems that traceroute results can be unreliable enough that there is a market for other network diagnostic tools. Part of the complication stems from the protocols that traceroute uses to probe the network, and how those routers along the way respond to each one. By default, traceroute uses Internet Control Message Protocol (ICMP) echo packets. According to its man page, the -P flag will allow the user to specific a desired protocol, the choices including UDP, TCP, GRE, and ICMP.

ICMP is a network-layer protocol that is used by routers (or other network devices) to send error information or updates. Not unlike other protocols, ICMP consists of datagrams, including an IP header. The protocol standards were first definied in 1982 in RFC 777, and then updated in RFC 792. A ICMP packet is sent in response to an incoming packet when the transmission of that message fails. It’s important to note that ICMP is not a transport protocol like TCP or UDP, meaning that it isn’t really used to send data between systems. Diagnostic tools such as traceroute make use of its error reporting function by using the Time To Live (TTL) IP header, which specifies the number of routers a packet can pass through. By starting at a TTL of 0, waiting for an ICMP message, and then incrementing TTL until the destination is reached, traceroute can reveal the nodes along a network route.

Another interesting aspect of the traceroute results were the round trip times (RTT). I also noticed that the RTTs for some of the hops from my home were much longer than any from either NYU networks (though the hops to Amazon had longer RTTs than the other sites from all locations). In some cases, it seems that the RTTs may correspond to a physical distance (but then, surely my apartment isn’t so far from everything!), and possibly the processing delays of routers along the way. Given the speed of light, 1ms represents about 100km, some of the difference must be due to particularities of my network route from home (as I am not 100s of km away from NYU).

Time: Voyager's Pulsar Map

I knew going into this assignment that the diagram on the Voyager Golden Record was a pulsar map, showing our “address” relative to the nearest pulsars of our galaxy. I knew that the small etches along each line related to the frequencies at which the pulsars, well, pulsed–but not much else beyond that.

This website was particularly helpful in illuminating how to interpret those lines: How to Read A Pulsar. Even with the high resolution photo, I found some of the lines a bit hard to read, but here I go interpreting the etching of one of the lines below:

The marked purple line etching could be read as 10011001011010111010010111000:



Then, using this nifty binary to decimal calculator I found, I can convert that to decimal: 321746104. As the article suggests, we would then need to multiply this by the amount of time it would take for “the electron of an hydrogen atom to change relative to its proton.” Things I have forgotten from chemistry class! Apparently, this is called the hyperfine transition period of hydrogen, and may be a more universal measurement time across alien species.

Time: Project Ideas

A few ideas for “clocks” of various sorts:

  1. A digital face of a clock that takes the length of a minute to render the current time to the screen, and then erases itself upon completion, and then begins to render the next minute. Inspired by this actual piece in the Rijksmuseum:


  2. Email alert for when 98% percent of your body has been replaced by new atoms (from the time that you set up the alert). Based on Atomic Tune-Up: How the Body Rejuvenates Itself, and of course, the Ship of Theseus.

  3. Camera interaction to “slow down” time: as you move further to your webcam, the displayed time begins to show milliseconds, giving the impression that time is incrementing very quickly. As you move closer to the webcam, time will increment in seconds, creating the impression it is slowing down.

  4. Data visualization of GPS satellites, with explainer of how the atomic clocks on board help provide you with accurate GPS coordinates.

A final astronomical instrument:

For my current role at the Lower East Side Girls Club, I’m working on adding new interfaces to AMNH’s space data visualization program, Open Space. For Time, I’d like to add feature to Open Space that would allow you to manipulate a (physical) clock interface to move along “in time” in the program. Also, I’d also like to render the Zodiac constellations one by one as time progresses in the program.

Post-Natural: Project Idea

I’m really interested in a kind of measuring device that captures a personal sense of time, or our own internal clock. I have two forms in which I’ve imagined this project: (1) as a set field instruments and guide for capturing one’s own sense of time and (2) a simple data recording device that has the user note where in the sky they believe the sun to be. The first is a more speculative measuring device / data collection endeavor: the kit would include doing a series of repetitive (or seemingly “cyclical” activities) to capture a notion of personal time. The second could be a physical or digital tool that would capture the motion of the sun along a arc representing its traverse across the sky.

Time: Sky Objects

Last night, I found two sky objects of note: Arcturus & Vega.

They form two of three parts of what is known as “the Summer Triangle.” The third unseen member is Altair, which is a part of the Aquila constellation. These three stars are known for their evening ascent into the summer sky in northern latitudes. The identification of these stars was completed with the help of a nifty iOS app: Sky Guide.

According to a dubious source on the Internet (that I haven’t fact-checked!), a satellite discovered far more infrared radiation from Vega than one would expect for a star of its size. Obviously, the remnants of an alien civilization.
